Melody Wood Portfolio
Biography:
Melody Wood (she/her) is a nēhiyaw napēkan from waskicosihk (Little Pine First Nation). She is both a contemporary and traditional two spirit artist who lives and works in Saskatoon SK. From Little Pine First Nation, she enjoys many mediums. Photography, videography, and traditional arts such as quill work, birch bark basket, red willow baskets. Largely, her works are from a two-spirit lens.
She doesn’t have a formal artistic education from a western institute. She believes that if you are born Indigenous, you are inherently an artist, it’s just finding your gift. For traditional art, she has taken classed from Elders and knowledge keepers. For contemporary art, she is self-taught and improved with practice as shown with photography and videography. She has been creating her entire life. From a young age, the way she views the world is through her eyes as lenses, in finding that perfect shot or setting up and creating small videos. She now has her sights set on digital art.
Her work has been shown locally at places such as Wanuskewin, Amigos, OUTSaskatoon, Paved Arts, Apophony Press and the St Frances Morrison Library. She has mentored youth in their projects. She always has projects on the go. She always has her hand in something if she is not the artist. She loves bringing people together with a vision in her head. The Indian Residential Schools have taken a toll on her biological family. With her sister, they are raising nieces and nephews, working for positive change in their family.
